a beautiful little church in the heart of the woods, no tarmac roads, nearest is approx 2 miles away and yet still has recent interments.
This is something that you don' see very often these days, a museum that is free. It's only on the small side but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in what there is on show. Its amazing. There's so much to look at that you could spend most of your day here. Whatever you do, if you are in Porlock Weir you should make sure that you go in here.
The port at Porlock Weir is, today, worth visiting just for its peace and tranquility but this was not always the position. In the days when travel by sea was the easiest way to travel up and down the coast, the port at Porlock Weir was very busy indeed. In the 18th and 19th centuries corn, flour, bricks and oysters were sent out from the port and coal from South Wales was brought in. Today, this centuries old port is the home of yachts and small boats, with many more visiting during the spring and summer. Being tidal, when the tide is out these yachts and boats look as though they have been stranded with nowhere to go but, as the tide comes it, they begin to float and come back to life. There is a car park behind the port and refreshments are available in the village.
Even though Porlock Beach is mainly pebbles, if you have the right type of shoe, its length makes it fantastic for walking and, while you are walking, there are some lovely views across the Bristol Channel. It's a great spot for anglers and, unsurprisingly given it's position on the Bristol Channel, there are some pill-boxes from the Second World War. There's a car park right behind the beach where there are also some public toilets. Refreshments are available in the lovely thatched-cottage village of Porlock Weir.
