I would highly recommend visiting Salem, NJ for their Christmas walking tour. The homes and museums were so beautifully decorated for the Christmas holidays and all of our hosts could not have been nicer. I started the day at the Salem County Holiday parade and ended it at the Tree Lighting Downtown. The tour took me to about a dozen homes and churches and I can see that the City continues to improve as more and more houses keep getting renovated. Each of the houses and churches offered entertainment, refreshments and the room that were so meticulously decorated to the hilt. They were tastefully done with such beautiful decorations. While on the tour, I had a Soup Lunch at St. John’s Church and the New England Clam Chowder was excellent! What a nice treat while listening to the carolers. The whole day was wonderful and I can’t wait to do it again.

The Salem Fire Museum is one of those small historical museums that are rarely opened but are worth the trip when they are open. It is full of all sorts of historical equipment and holds the rich history of the Salem, NJ Fire Department with all sorts of fire equipment and historical vehicles. The building itself is a historical part of the downtown and showcases the rich history of the community.
Quinton's Bridge At Alloways Creek

Quinton's Bridge at Alloways Creek is not much more than a marker now but this was a major part of the Revoluntionary War as the British used the site to control crops and materials going to Philadelphia during the war. All that is left is a marker of the site but you can use your imagination in what must have happened here three hundred years earlier. The creek is so small though you would think that they could have waded through it. Things must have changed over the years.
Salem Oak/friends Burial Cemetery

The Salem Oak was an historical tree that stood in the cemetery for over three hundred years and was part of the virgin forest of the area. It was where treaties were signed and where history was made. Unfortunately the tree fell in 2019 due to years of rot inside the tree. There are still large samplings that are hundreds of years old still in the cemetery giving it a majestic look. It really does make a statement. The Salem Friends Cemetery is a standout in its condition and appearance in the middle of the Salem Downtown. The original families of the town are buried here with famous names like Hancock and Bassett. Take time to walk around the historic tombstones and admire the craftsmenship of the stones. It is an interesting look at the city's past.
