Patalpuri temple is located inside Allahabad Fort near Akshayvat. This temple is said to have been in existence since the Vedic period and is one of the oldest temple in India. This temple is dedicated to lord Vishnu. According to Hindu mythology, Patalpuri temple is believed to be the place where the revered sage Markandeya performed intense penance and received the blessings of lord Vishnu. it is also believed that this is the place where sage Rishi Markandeya wrote the Hindu Scriptures. The temple's underground chambers are considered to be the entrance to the patal and hence the name derived as Patalpuri temple. Architecture of the temple: A small passage at the bottom of a steps takes you to the temple. A large statue of Dharmaraja greets you at the entrance. There are several God and Goddess idols inside this temple. The architecture of the Patalpuri temple is quite unique as it is located underground. This temple is located below the courtyard of the fort and is 84 feet in length and 39 feet in width. There is a small passage down the stairs to the temple. This temple is built in a cave like structure with intricate carvings on the walls. The interior of the is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and various incarnations of lord Vishnu. Visiting Hours: Patalpuri temple is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India and is open to the public for darshan through out the year from Morning 07:00 am to Evening 06:00 pm
